STITCH FIX KIDS REVIEW

The Upshot

If you’re a dad such as myself, you need to read this Stitch Fix kids review. Why? Because this is the best invention for dads since the idiot box. It’s a bunch of clothes, delivered to your doorstep, that your kids will want to wear.

For dads out there that would do anything NOT to go clothes shopping (like moi), Stitch Fix for kids is where it’s at. Just pick everything out on the app and Presto! your children are clothed.

You pay Stich Fix twenty bucks up front and then pay for whatever you decide to keep in the box. The rest gets shipped back via an included, prepaid bag. No extra costs for the shipping in either direction.

Check out our full review below for why all dads need to get on this bandwagon.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I’m making this sound like I have anything to do with this. I don’t. My lovely wife, Sarah, handles the Children Being Clothed Department (THANK GOD), but when she walked me through this process, I was duly impressed.

The Full Review

In case you’re wondering, a Stitch Fix not only sounds really weird when you say it 10 times in a row, it’s also a box of clothes. Or a “fix”, in the parlance of our times man. But not just any ol’ box of rags. These rags are hand-picked by a fancy stylist!

As silly as I find the idea of our kids receiving a stylized box of clothes, I must say it’s pretty awesome. You answer a whole bunch of questions about colors, materials, styles, etc. so that the Stitch Fix folks can put together a box of goods that your kids will like.

You pay the stylist $20 upfront but it’s credited towards any purchase you make from the dozen or so articles of clothing that arrive. Anything you’re not loving, just mail on back to Stitch Fix at no charge.

“It’s a surprise and you get new clothes that maybe fit you.”

Stich Fix for Kids Features

Boys and Girls Clothing

When you’re creating a new profile, you can opt for boys or girls clothing. Alternatively, you can select both which would be ideal for my son as he routinely wanders around in his sisters’ pants wondering why they’re so tight.

So, if you’ve asked, “Is there a Stitch Fix for girls?”, the answer is yes; and boys too! As for what age Stitch Fix kids is for, it ranges from 2T all the way up 18 years old.

Subscription or On Demand

You can shop on Stitch Fix just like you would any online shopping site to buy a couple shirts and shorts. But they are known for the subscription boxes which can be delivered monthly, every other month or every three months.

If you go with the subscription model, its super easy to modify timing. Within the account, you can skip a fix altogether, reschedule the delivery date, change the frequency and stop auto-delivery if you like.

Style Profile

I don’t imagine the Beastie Boys had Stich Fix kids on the brain whilst rapping their seminal Intergalactic lyrics but when I see the words Style Profile, it’s hard for my brain not to go there.

ANYWAY…you can setup your kiddos’ profile of style around loads of categories like clothes and shoe size, body shape, places you shop and more.

In here, you can also select what price range you’d like to stay in, by category. The drop-down menus give you ranges like $10-15 and $50+

Stich Fix kids has a clever feature that allows you to link Pinterest boards to your account so the stylist can get some inspiration for what to select. As well, you can detail out what categories to avoid, like pajamas or skirts. The same opt-out approach can be applied to fabrics, colors and apparel details.

Style Shuffle

Kudos to Stitch Fix for gamifying the process of buying clothes. Much as I can’t stand shopping for apparel, their Style Shuffle sure makes it fun.

You just Thumb Up or Thumb Down whatever article of clothing is on the shuffle screen and it moves on to the next one. Doing so gives your stylist helpful insight into what you’d likely prefer in your next Fix. If only someone could invent this for beer…

Shipping and Returns Included

In order to receive a box, you need to pay a $20 fee for your Fixer to decide what’s in there. Once you receive it and try everything on, simply pay for whatever you want to keep and send the rest back.

The Fix includes a prepaid, plastic pouch to stuff with the items you’re not keeping. You can schedule a pickup from your front porch and that’s it. There are no additional charges for the delivery to you or shipping back to the Stitch Fixers

25% Discount

Obviously, Stitch Fix would like you to keep (and pay for) as many articles of clothing as possible. To that end, they offer a 25% discount on your entire box o’ goods if you keep everything.

Mobile Apps

While Stitch Fix of course has a fully functioning desktop site, their mobile apps are excellent. You can do all the basics of style profilin’ and Fix ordering either way but the app offers an easy way to interact with your stylist.

Just snap a picture of clothes you like, add a note and submit it directly to your Fixer. this is another way Stich Fix for kids makes it easy on dads and moms to shop for their wee humans.

Things We Like About Kids Stitch Fix

Variety is the Spice of Life

By its very nature, you’re going to receive some surprises in your Fix. Sarah likes this because the kids get brands and colors that she might not normally gravitate towards.

Not to mention articles that aren’t commonly available in your local store. And with a pro putting the box together, she’s usually very happy with how it turns out.

Personalization

I dislike shopping at stores because I dislike shopping. But also because it’s so generic. Hat tip to Stitch Fix for managing to personalize the shopping experience so nicely.

Much of this is accomplished via the aforementioned Style Profile, Style Shuffle and passing notes back and forth with your styler.

You can select stores you like to shop at, brands you prefer, sizes, colors and more. You can also let your Stitch Fixer know what you don’t like, further narrowing and thereby personalizing the experience.

The Clothes are Quality

If you have kids, you know how much abuse they give to their gear. We’ve had the course in buying cheapo apparel only to have it fall apart after a couple uses.

While we know they’ll grow out of everything pretty quickly, on the same token we want clothing that will last more than 3 months. Less waste is a good tradeoff for slightly higher prices than you might find at Big Box Store Brand X.

Pricing Ranges

The pricing structure is where the Fixes really shine. You can go through all the different categories and select a five dollar range you’re comfortable with. Everything from casual shirts to jeans, jackets and shoes.

Depending on the item, the ranges have higher or lower ends. Leggings can be as low as $10-15 while the jackets & coats group has a top end of $50+. That fifty-dollar figure is the highest available option.

Referrals

Clearly my wife Sarah should be a Professional Referral-er. As I was familiarizing myself with this newfangled Stitch Fixery, I came across the referral page. It’s a simple formula – if your friend buys a Fix, you both get a $25 credit.

When I exclaimed, “You have $225 in referral credit in here!”, Sarah looked at me like it was SOP. Clearly I need to get out more. Also, I have been informed that lest I want to sleep in the garage I better be sharing her Stitch Fix referral link, so here it is – go buy stuff!

Sustainability and Equity

It turns out I can be wrong. Prior to this article, Stitch Fix bothered me because of my perception that by shipping clothes all over Timbuktu, we were single-handedly trashing the planet. Via both fast fashion and transportation pollution.

The reality is that Stitch Fix has an extremely robust sustainability and equity program to address these very concerns. Their vendors sign a code of conduct to the effect that they will minimize their environmental impact and provide fair working conditions.

They work to create an ethical mineral supply chain by working with manufacturers using conflict-free mining. In addition, Stitch Fix uses recycled polyester and has set aggressive sustainability goals. The list goes on in this vein.

Of course, I’m not suggesting all this clothing is made by joyful Oompa Loompas in a Willy Wonka factory of fun-candy-time. But it does make me feel somewhat better knowing they’re not deliberately polluting the planet.

It’s Fun for Kids

Everyone likes getting a package in the mail. Especially your kids. Check out our KiwiCo Crate review for more on this.

So, convenience, pricing and features aside, Stitch Fix for kids is fun for said small humans. And isn’t fun the point of being a kid? They get to try on new clothes, they get to chat about color schemes…well, I should say our female children do such activities with their female parent.

In standard fashion, the tiny humans had something to say about it:

  • 9-year-old Peanut: “I like the way they chose the clothes based on style but it’s still a surprise.”
  • 8-year-old MareBear: “It’s a surprise and you get new clothes that maybe fit you.”

The boy has not yet participated in Box o’ Clothes so I can’t be sure if he’d find it quite as fun. I for one am happy the girls get a such a kick out of it even if I can’t honestly say I get quite as excited as they do.

Support Up the Wazoo

Got a question on what’s in your Fix? You can get that scratch itched in virtually all forms of communication except carrier pigeon. A robust knowledge base covers all the generic questions. You know, the ones you never need answered.

From there you can send an email or start a chat on their site. If you want to hear a human voice, submit your info and they’ll even call you back.

Things We Would Change About Stitch Fix for Kids

Sizing Challenges

This is not an issue exclusive to Stitch Fix, that being where Brand A and Brand B might both say size 8 but one is closer to a 10.

You’ll run into this at a brick-and-mortar store but of course, you can just try on another size onsite. With a Fix, you’ll need to ship it back and have another shot on the next box.

All the Shipping

We talked about my concerns with sustainability and all that Stitch Fix is doing to not thrash Mother Earth. And I do think a quarterly shipment is not the end of the world (pun intended). But if you’re getting a box every month, man, it’s a lot of shipping back and forth.

I realize that everything is delivered same-day at this point but it still bothers me watching the fleets of UPS, FedEx, USPS, Amazon and DHL vehicles flying around, burning a hole in the atmosphere.

How Much Does Kids Stitch Fix Cost?

The pricing is pretty simple. You pay a stylist twenty bucks up front to whip up a box of goods. That includes shipping costs to you and anything you send back. From there, you pay for anything you keep.

Your Fix will have a prepaid shipping bag enclosed and ready to be used for returns. Just stuff it with whatever you’re not keeping and set it out on the porch for pickup. Or Porch Pirates, depending on the day.

Item pricing varies widely by category but here are a couple examples:

  • Love Glam Girl: Byrona Tie Dye Top – $18
  • Hippie Girl: Sheera Crochet Denim Shorts – $24

Who Is Stitch Fix?

It was founded in 2011 by Katrina Lake, who set out to blend the human element of personal styling with high quality clothes and a proprietary algorithm. She began by shipping boxes from her college apartment and today serves millions of men and women nationwide.

Alternatives

Though we haven’t tried any of these, they sound interesting and might be worth considering.

  • KidPik – looks like a ringer for Stitch Fix but appears to be solely children’s clothes.
  • Rockets of Awesome – another kids only clothing subscription box but with a funny name.

Final Notes on our Stitch Fix for Kids Review

I have to hand it to Stitch Fix, they’ve made me a convert. I’ve imbibed the Kool-Aid and me likey! I wouldn’t say I personally will be looking to fill up boxes with my name on them. But the point of this article is how we like it for kids. And we’re big fans.
